The China Monologues
For more than four years, I worked as a page designer at a major publication company. However, I was also a journalist, and I sought opportunities to continue writing professionally. That was when an editor tasked me with writing the weekly nightlife column. I did so, enthusiastically, covering upcoming bar and brewery events. However, when I packed my bags for China, I hoped to continue on. She happily accepted, and I went from the neighborhood “Beer Girl” to the expat submitting her wild tales like some wacky overseas correspondent. “The China Monologues” began, and ran for nearly five years.
“Travel Made Timeless With Early-Morning Sacrifices”
A tale from the middle of China, as my husband and I journey to Leshan to see the giant Buddha.
“Sneak Past the Sleepers”
While exploring Hong Kong and its islands, my friend and I stumbled across a trail that boasted beautiful sunsets … and many creepy crawlers, too.
Ancient History Powers Modern City
Our quick trip to Xi’an gave my husband and I quite a lesson in how history and modernity can (beautifully) coexist.
Frozen City Was Loaded With Surprises
On a long weekend at the start of the year, my husband took me to explore Harbin and the icy festivities the city boasts.
Keeping Cool at Thailand’s Grand Palace and Ruins
It’s no secret my husband and I don’t cope well in the heat. This story sums up our sweaty adventures in Thailand.
Culture Yard
While living in Beijing, China, I was lucky enough to secure a spot as a freelance writer for a Chinese language school. I happily accept articles on the nitty gritty of Mandarin Chinese - grammar points and character analyses. Here are a few of my favorite topics:
Rita Mandarin Chinese
For years, Fan Shuhong was my Chinese tutor. (And she was an exceptional one at that.) However, our paths split, as she moved to the U.S. and I remained in Beijing. Yet we always kept in touch. As she began developing her online presence, and her exceptional pronunciation course, she reached out for help: Could I help her copy edit her course, and write scripts for her YouTube channel? My answer was an emphatic YES. Below are a few links to the videos we collaborated on.
City Weekend - Beijing
Via a mutual friend, I was connected with an editor at City Weekend - Beijing. I began writing a series of restaurant reviews for the publication, as well as one LGBTQ+ column. (Unfortunately, the website has since been taken down, and my only remaining article can be found in this PDF of the published version.)
