News Design | Front Pages
When it comes to front-page design, design is dictated by content. Sometimes we get space to be creative and delicate with our design. Other times, breaking news demands a stronger, bolder layout. What’s more, most of the design work happens at deadline. It forces you to learn to work quickly, and to work well with others, as front pages are intensely collaborative efforts.

News Design | Feature Pages
Feature pages are almost like a holiday for a news designer. While most pages are dictated by structure and content, feature pages are where creativity is allowed in. Throughout my near-decade working as a news designer, I was able to create cover pages and inside spreads for all sorts of events. It was always a joy to experiment with typography and art, all while remaining in the confines of the news page.

News Design | Sports Pages
When I first rotated onto the sports design desk, I was overwhelmed. A lot goes into sports pages, not the least of which designing a page once game results come in. Luckily, I was bolstered by colleagues who helped manage that deadline stress. They also gave me a lot of freedom to play with feature stories. Sports pages were where I had most freedom to play with cut-out images and unique headline ideas.

Magazine Spreads | Honors Thesis
Alongside my news-editorial journalism degree, I sought to complete the honors program at Colorado State University. As part of that process, I needed to create an honors thesis that would showcase my degree focus. I chose to work with my advisor on an LGBTQ+-themed magazine. I had already written the feature articles as the university newspaper’s designated LGBTQ+ beat reporter. So I adapted that content to a magazine layout. These spreads were created with that in mind.
